Our main farm is located in the rural area of "totumo" a couple of minutes of Ibague, Tolima (Colombia). This area, like many of the northern Andes, is well known for its excellent range of thermal floors, ideal for the successful development of large varieties of agricultural products and in farming floors in relative proximity.

Races and Lines
There exist in the world several lines of quails (known in English like "quail"), inside which there are those of production of meat, production of egg, double intention and ornamental. As our intention is to speak principally about the production of egg, we will do a small summary of other races.
For meat production, there are now several lines registered, the most important are: "Bobwhite", the "Texas Quail", the "Giant Brown" and the "White Giant" (Coturnix Coturnix). In a major effort genetic, the United States have succeeded in developing animals reaching weights in adult birds close to 350 grams. Our breeding farm has some of these lines.
In double intention a line of quail exists called, in the United States, " Pharaon "; other lines of this category are the "Tibetana" and "Old English", with a good capacity of posture of eggs and with an important weight to commercialize his meat. It is generally a quail with average weight of 180 grams and an approximate consumption of food of 26 daily grams.
The ornamental quails are very beautiful birds but of little development in our country; inside the most showy there are the "Gambel", the " California Valley ", "Blue Valley" and "Tenesse Red". There exists another Quail, the "Button" that is characterized by his small size. We are provided with some birds of these lines.
In relation to the Quails of posture, the activity of quail study most developed in our country, there are two species in our view, the "Coturnix japonica" and "Korean."
Línes of Posture Index
The "Coturnix Japónica"
This is the original quail of Asia with more characteristics of laying, with an average weight of 128 grams and whose daily consumption of food ranges between 22 and 25 grams; his egg also possesses important weight.
At the present time it is very difficult to find Japónicas pure in the world, because their different crossings with the “Pharaon” have reduced him presence.
The Japónica Quail in our country can be raised in most of the thermal floors, although she is less active in very cold climates (from the 12 degrees Celsius, until the 30); in these climates its posture can be within the commercial averages although the food consumption could be increased.Our quails are delivered between 4 and 5 weeks, after being raised in an organic way and excellent handling , treating to always fulfill the international standards of “good treatment to the animals”. Females sex of a day with a 97% of margin of error, with perfect phenotype and adorn with feathers. His posture must begin to the six weeks and a half, reaching his peak of posture to the 120 days with an approximated average of 93%, from where it is descending up to 70%, percentage where the quail farmer must begin to make graiding to be able to take 50% of the lot to a period of posture superior to one year or more.
A variety exists that separates of this line that is the Japónica Blanca, a bird with European origins and that very good result in our climate.
When the Japónica is genetically pure and raised well, it must have postures in the first year of 300 eggs and 50 % of the lot must reach two years and reach a minimal peak of posture of 90 % and an annual average of 75 %.
The “Korean”
This is a much smaller quail, with an approximate weight of 95 grams, and with a consumption of approximated food of 20 to 23 grams. For being a smaller bird , his posture, in most of the cases, it does not reach the year; therefore it does not become an important option for the economic development of a quail farm operation. His egg is a little smaller than the one of the Japónica.In our country, most of the producing concentrated food companies produce special food for quails. All the presentations come in bulks of 40 kg. and you can obtained in most of concentrated food distributors in marks like “Contegral”, “Purina”, “Race”, “Italcol”, “Solla”, “Cresta Roja " and many more.
The difference is in the level of protein that has every concentrate; this level is in the components described in the labels of each mark. Normally the percentage described in the information does not correspond to the reality of the same one. Being the quail a bird extraordinarily sensitive to the protein, the diminution of 1 or 2 points in the mixture affects notably the posture (Protein = Posture). As the protein is expensive, balanced food with the highest number of proteins are necessarily more expensive, therefore in this business is particularly well-known saying "the cheap comes out expensive." Better concentrate and be more costly, leading to better posture and increased longevity, which means more productivity. You can add to a daily diet of green foods (red clover, alfalfa or grass, as a supplement to grill [piedrilla ground]). This will not only save a little money, allowing the bird closer to their food natural and logical to a healthier diet.
The water that the birds drink, must be completely clean and not to keep residues of meal. We advise the drinking-troughs of "Nipple", in a proportion of 1 drinking-trough for 10 birds; this lightens the work and allows a significant level of health. In case of having drinking-troughs of glass or of pipe, cleaning and replacement of water must be at least once a day
The quail do not need vitamins or supplements. As a bird with a relatively low cost does not justify spending money on these, because the improvement is so low that it is very difficult to return.
Meanwhile the birds maintained a constant diet, and they do not lack food or water, and birds are good genetics, surely the economic performance will be important. The lack of water or to warm water for birds is catastrophic, and after this happens, never regained the posture. If missing the food for a few hours, the posture will be reduced significantly, and although recovered, it will not reach the highest peak.

For the production of quail eggs, of a commercial way the quails necessarily need to be installed in enclosed sheds and metallic cages.
Sheds
The sheds for quails must be constructed considering the temperature of the zone where they go away to install. Preferably they must have the following characteristics:
- They must have a wall of approximately 80 centimeters from the floor and it must be of concrete (preferably polished smooth), with several water-drainages that they facilitate cleaning.
- The floor should have a slight slope, allowing the drain codornaza or excrement quail a "bio-digester" or a lake with fish.
- The ceiling must be to a height minim of 2,5 meters and with thermal roofing tiles in preference (that give heat in cold climates and do not warm up to high temperatures).
- The mesh that surrounds them must be of a diameter that does not allow to the entrance of flies or noxious animals to the shed; in preference must be plastic since, although a little expensive, are but more durable.
- They must have curtains that prevent the air currents from touching directly to the birds inside the shed.
- In very warm climates the sheds must be provided with air extractors; in very cold climates with lamps or gas breeders.
- The shed must have lamps of white light that allow to illuminate the same one of an entire way up to 3 hours later to get dark the day.
- The area of the same should be large enough to withstand the kind of cage to be used and the amount of them, adding a motion for staff, minimum of 1 meter around the cages.
Cages
There are two classes of cages that allow the exploitation of quails and the choice depends on how much space is available:
The Pyramidal Cage: This type of cage has measures of 2 by 1 meter, and consist of 6 modules placed in pyramidal form (3 of each side).
Every module has 3 cages with capacity of 10 quails each one. In whole a Pyramidal cage has a capacity between 180 and 200 birds, depending this number of the temperature that it finds in the place. This system, although it occupies more space, has advantages on the Vertical one, since it a greater air circulation and more luminosity. When falling “codornaza”, or quail excrement, directly to the floor, its cleaning and work is much more easy.
Vertical Cage: This cage is a measure 1 x 1 meters and is composed of 5 or 6 modules that can each accommodate between 150 and 180 birds.
This type of cage occupies much less space but has the disadvantage that in the inferior modules the luminosity is smaller and the birds found there are more exposed to carbon monoxide produced by themselves and their excrement, reason why these modules tend to offer minor average of posture; in addition the handling of codornaza or excrement quails is much more expensive.
Water throughs
Although there are several types of drinking-troughs, only we recommend the automatic drinking-troughs of "Nipple". Its cost is relatively low, Its produced in our country and his free maintenance allows more flexibility in the operation.
